Luxury Holidays in Calcutta

India’s cultural capital and ‘City of Palaces’

Also called Kolkata, this is India’s second largest city: the capital of West Bengal. A fast-paced, dynamic cosmopolis, Calcutta is the cultural capital of India, and known as the ‘City of Palaces’.

Here modernity mixes with echoes of the past – stately British Raj-era architecture, palatial mansions, exotic gardens and splendid parks. The Victorian grandeur of the colonial district is at Calcutta’s heart.

The crown prince of Indian cuisine, many of Calcutta’s famous restaurants are over a century old, while street vendors sell delicious food fresh off the stove – try succulent, steamed ‘hilsa’ fish, marinaded in mustard. Take a starlit boatride along the Hooghly River; visit the Botanical Gardens at Sibpur, or enjoy October’s Durga Puja festival – the colourful Hindu carnival.
