South Africa - The Garden Route

Revered as one of the highlights of visiting South Africa, the Garden Route is two hundred kilometres of spectacularly rugged coast backed by verdant mountains, and is defined as stretching from Heidelberg in the west to the Eastern Cape's Tsitsikamma Forest and Storms River.

Luxurious forests cover ocean-facing mountain slopes that line the coastal road, providing the lush green vegetation that earns the route its name. Although immensely popular with visitors, many areas of the coast remain untouched, offering superbly deserted trails for hiking and swathes of secluded, golden sandy beach and bays that afford every kind of marine adventure imaginable.

As you drive between Cape Town and the Garden Route, your journey takes you though The Whale Coast and the nature reserves around Walker Bay. There are a number of charming seaside towns to visit, one of which, Hermanus, is said to be the world’s best land-based whale watching site. The focal point of the town is a pretty historic harbour, making for a rewarding stop on your coastal odyssey.
